According to ProPakistani, Pakistan is expected to take a further step up in the world of IT and telecommunications as the Government plans the launch of the 5G service.
As the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT) officials observe several countries to be working on this stepwise launching, the Govt. of Pakistan intends to be heading in the same direction. According to MoITT official’s planning, the launch can be expected in the 5 major cities of Pakistan i.e. Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar as the very first step.
The 5G service policy draft is shared amongst the industry and related stakeholders by the MoITT and sources report inputs are received from one or two operators by the ministry. At the request of these stakeholders, the date for the input on the policy guidelines draft is being extended to 28 February 2022. The ministry is waiting for a response from the remaining stakeholders of the industry before the draft can be shared with the Federal Government. Hence then, in accordance to the policy directives of the ministry, the GOP will be issuing policy directive on 5G service.
The launch of 5G service can be expected in the last quarter of 2022 or the first quarter of 2023 as per GoP’s Plan. In regard to this, an advisory spectrum committee has been devised and incentives for the spectrum rollout are expected to be announced in the upcoming finance bill. The Ministry of Finance, with MoITT, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Frequency Allocation Board (FAB), and other relevant stakeholder’s consultation will confirm incentives, which will then be reviewed in the Financial Bill 2022-23.
