The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is currently working alongside UNESCO to develop a comprehensive “Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy.” This strategy is designed to empower women by promoting greater utilization of the internet, cell phones, and digital skills, aligning with the International Telecommunication Union 2030 guidelines.
The goal of the strategy is to outline actionable steps and responsibilities that both PTA and other key partners can undertake to enhance women’s access, connectivity, and affordability to digital services. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, PTA aims to narrow the existing gender gap in digital access within Pakistan.
In 2022, the initiative kicked off with a data collection and analysis process. This involved expert surveys, encompassing viewpoints from national and international digital and gender experts, as well as physical surveys targeting unconnected populations.
An Interactive Voice Response (IVR) survey was also conducted among mobile users. Additionally, PTA organized a series of workshops held in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta. The resulting strategy will be presented for validation by relevant stakeholders before its finalization and implementation.
