The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, along with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), faced criticism from the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications due to the ongoing internet slowdown across the country. The committee, led by Senator Palwasha Muhammad Zai Khan, addressed concerns about the significant impact of poor connectivity on businesses, particularly e-commerce. 

 

Senator Afnan Ullah highlighted that the internet issues could further harm the already strained economy, risking the loss of $3 billion in IT sector exports. Committee members, including Senator Afnanullah and Senator Humayun, criticized the lack of effective measures taken by the PTA and IT ministry, with Senator Humayun accusing them of hindering business activities.

 

In response, the Secretary of the IT Ministry, Aisha Humera Chaudhry, stated that the problem primarily affects cellular network users and not Wi-Fi services. PTA officials claimed they are assessing the issue, with a comprehensive report expected in two weeks. The committee also discussed the Personal Data Protection Bill, aiming to safeguard citizens’ data. The bill is in its final stages, with consultations involving over 100 stakeholders.
