OpenAI Shifts to For-Profit Model, CEO Altman to Gain Equity Stake
October 4, 2024
OpenAI is planning a major organizational shift by moving towards a for-profit model, which will remove control from its nonprofit board to attract new investors and improve its governance structure. CEO Sam Altman is expected to receive his first equity stake as part of this transition.
This announcement coincides with a leadership change, as Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati revealed her departure on X (formerly Twitter). The nonprofit board was previously involved in a controversial decision to temporarily oust Altman last year, before his reinstatement, following pressure from key partners, including Microsoft.
The restructuring is aimed at streamlining decision-making and securing additional funding, but it also raises concerns about the company’s commitment to its original mission of developing safe and beneficial AI. While OpenAI’s nonprofit arm will retain some control, it will hold only a minority stake in the newly structured profit-oriented company.
Despite these changes, OpenAI reassured that it remains focused on developing AI for the benefit of all and is working closely with its board to ensure success in its mission. The timeline for implementing this structural change remains uncertain. (Image taken from “The Irish Times”
