PTA Develops E-Waste Management Guidelines for the IT Sector

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is actively addressing the growing concern of electronic waste (e-waste) in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector by crafting comprehensive guidelines.

These guidelines aim to promote sustainable disposal and recycling practices within the sector. According to a PTA report, the primary goal is to enhance environmental sustainability and support the development of a circular economy. The guidelines will focus on mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with improper disposal and recycling of electronic equipment, such as the release of toxic substances into the environment.

PTA is consulting with industry stakeholders and experts to ensure the guidelines are both effective and aligned with global best practices. These steps are crucial as the frequent updates in technology continue to shorten the lifespan of electronic devices, increasing the volume of e-waste. The initiative is part of a broader effort to prevent the potential environmental and health consequences of unchecked e-waste accumulation.
