The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been honored at the LEAD Awards 2023 for its dedication to ensuring the safety of children and youth online. The award was accepted by the Director of PTA, who heads the Child Online Protection Committee, at a ceremony held in the UAE by SAMENA Telecommunications Council.
PTA’s accomplishments in this regard include signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNICEF, the establishment of an emergency short code (1121) for reporting child abuse, and conducting a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) survey in collaboration with UNICEF Global as part of the ‘Disrupting Harm Programme.’ Pakistan is now the 12th country to have conducted this survey.
Additionally, PTA has partnered with TikTok to promote online safety in 100 government schools through awareness videos, booklets, and toolkits. They have also run an extensive awareness campaign that includes videos, articles, public notices, SMS messages, and engagement with Islamic scholars, cricketers, and the entertainment industry.
These efforts have earned PTA the LEAD Award and have positioned Pakistan as a leader in safeguarding the digital future of its youth. The LEAD Awards recognize the accelerated efforts of regional technology providers, corporations, telecom operators, and regulators. SAMENA Telecommunications Council, a tri-regional association spanning over 25 countries, represents telecom operators and various stakeholders.
