Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will start producing a humanoid robot, named Optimus, initially for use in Tesla’s factories next year. Musk expressed his hopes to have these robots ready for commercial sale by 2026. This announcement, made via a social media post on X, comes just before Tesla’s financial results were released, resulting in a more than 5% increase in Tesla’s stock price.

 

Musk aims to mass-produce these robots at a price below $20,000, although his previous ambitious timelines have not always been met. For instance, he predicted self-driving taxis would be operational by 2020, a goal that has faced delays. The unveiling of Tesla’s robotaxi has recently been postponed to October to include additional features.

 

As Tesla faces slowing electric vehicle sales, the company is increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence, self-driving technology, and robotics. Other tech giants like Honda and Boston Dynamics are also developing similar humanoid robots. Tesla’s move towards robotics represents a significant shift in its strategy to maintain innovation and leadership in the tech industry.
