Older Android Phones Lose WhatsApp Access

WhatsApp has officially stopped supporting phones running Android 5.0 and 5.1, a change that took effect on September 8, 2026. Anyone stuck on those versions, meaning their phone can’t be upgraded any further, will no longer be able to use WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business.

The new minimum is Android 6.0 Marshmallow. If a phone’s already running 6.0 or later, nothing changes.

Which Phones Are Affected?

This mostly hits older phones still running Android that never got pushed to newer software. WhatsApp gave a heads-up months in advance and reportedly warned affected users along the way, so they had time to prepare.

Realistically, this lands hardest in markets where older Android devices are still common, including Pakistan, India, Brazil, and parts of Southeast Asia and Africa.

What Should Users Do?

First move: check phone settings for an available OS update. If the manufacturer has stopped supporting the device altogether, a newer phone is probably the only real fix.

WhatsApp also recommends backing up chats before switching. A backup saved to Google Drive or internal storage can usually be restored on a new phone using the same number.
